Backspin Creeping Bentgrass
Creeping Bentgrass

Description

An above average performer in bentgrass trials, Backspin exhibits exceptional resistance to Dollar Spot disease. It also scores high in leaf texture and summer density ratings. Because of its exceptional seed yield, Backspin offers great value to golf course users. Backspin (Syn92-2) is a variety that has been released from the breeding program of Dr. E. C. Engleke of Texas A&M University. This project was financed by a grant from the USDA to develop a more heat tolerant bentgrass for usage on golf course greens.

Characteristics

FEATURES:
Uniform, fine leaf texture
Dark green color
Uniform growth habit
Higher tiller density
Higher heat tolerance
Low mowability

BENEFITS:
Improved overall appearance
Lower fertilizer requirement
Even putting surface
Improved playability
Improved summer density & appearance
Putting green use

Uses

Primarily for the professional user.
Golf courses greens, tees and fairways

Seeding Rates

New turf: 1 pound to 1000 square feet.
Overseeding: up to 1 pound per 1000 square feet as needed.

Establishment

Emergence: 10-14 days.

Adaptability & Care

It is recommended that bentgrass be fertilized with 4 1/2 pounds of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. An annual program would call for spring feeding of 1 1/2 pounds each in the spring, summer and early fall. Supplementary applications would be as color and growth dictate, but normally at a rate of no more than 1 pound per 1,000 square feet.

Quality Assurance

“Backspin” is a distinct variety of creeping bentgrass registered in the Oregon State seed certification program. PVP applied for.

To determine whether a cultivar's performance is truly different from another, subtract one entry's mean from another entry's mean. If this value is larger than the LSD value, the observed difference in cultivar performance is significant and did not happen by chance.
